No more keys! Open the main door with your iPhone
The simplest of all digital locks has finally arrived. We’re talking about the new Kevo door lock from Kwikset, which turns your iPhone into an easy digital key.
The Kevo looks like a normal lock, although the fact that the halo of blue light around the keyhole gives it a futuristic touch. Imagine you’re arriving home and your phone is in your pocket or purse. You just need to tap the Kevo lock and you can get in. Simple as that!
An app links your iPhone to the lock using Bluetooth and a location service: it’s great because you don’t need to waste 10 minutes searching for your keys. You just need to tap the lock with your finger and the halo turns green, letting you know the door is unlocked.
There’s just a detail you can’t forget. Since the digital lock only works with iPhones, for now, all your family members will need to have an Apple smartphone to unlock the door.
And now you must be thinking something like “but if I’m inside the house, near the lock, why can’t someone just tap the lock and get in?”. That’s impossible, because the Kevo always knows when you’re inside the house. Besides, the lock has a lot of levels of encryption, making it really really really difficult to hack. The Kevo lock runs on two AA batteries that will last for about a year.
And, if you don’t have an iPhone, you can still use the Kevo lock with a different kind of key, the Kevo Fob. It does basically the same thing as the iPhone and app, but you only get one fob per lock. The device is expected to come out this summer. Also, don’t worry if every technological device fails: Kevo will still work like a traditional door lock.
